Miért beszélünk annyit magunkról?/Why are we talking about ourselves so much?

I don't know if you have ever been wondering about why we are talking about ourselves so much, but i have! 'My opinion about it is...', 'I feel like this...', 'This and that has happened to ME' etc. However, this thing cannot be explained only by the fact that people are selfish and that the only thing they really care about is themselves. No. It's not the whole truth.

I'm not the only one who has come up with this question so far. Some researchers on the Harvard University has found out that talking about ourselves is rewarding. If we are answering questions about ourselves, even if they are stupid ones like what is our favourite colour or how our goldfish is called, there is an activity in our brain associated with reward. So when we are talking about our life, our own experiences, it activates the same parts of our brain as chocolate, drugs or sex does.

I find it really interesting, because if you are on a diet and you shouldn't eat chocolate, but you are in love with the feeling you get while eating it, according to this research you can easily just swap these things, and instead of eating a bar of chocolate, you can simply start spreading some information about yourself with the world. And if the researchers are right, you will feel better after this, just like you have eaten a whole table of chocolate. Nowadays, we have so many opportunities to talk about ourselves! Just think about the Facebook, the Instagram, even Blogger... These are the most common platforms that give us a billion chances to share information, photos about our lives, to spread our thoughts with the world.

So the researchers found out how our brain reacts when we are talking, but they don't know, why it reacts this way. I personally think that the answer is really simple. When we feel down, we usually need a friend or a psychologist, SOMEBODY that listens, and after somebdy has been quite for a time and we had an opportunity to talk, we feel better. And these are the negative things... So it's not surprising that when we are talking about positive feelings, the result is that we feel better, just like we have used some drugs, had sex or eaten a bar of chocolate. :P Don't be harsh on people that talk a lot or that share many photos of themselves on the internet. Many of us need this and it's okay. Even scientists say it! ;)

  1. That's such an interesting post! I'm always self conscious when blogging that I talk about my life too much too. It's sometimes hard to make a point while applying it to everybody!

  7. Wow! Fascinating post. I didn't know there was so much psychology behind this. It makes me look at social networks a lot differently now. But what about those people who share TOO much? Like, when they share bits of their life that makes you think it's TMI? Or when they have fights with people on facebook? lol. I think that's what happens when they become addicted to over sharing information. Kind of like eating too much chocolate? I could be wrong, though.

Anyway, thanks for your comment on my blog! I really like yours :) I'm now following you through GFC. I don't have a facebook yet for my blog...but I will soon! And I'll follow you on there when I do.
